SEO - optimize each web page in your site for a search term
Inbound links - using anchor text that are also search terms
Directory listings - PFI pay for inclusion like Yahoo
Directory listings - other directories related to your field
Write articles! Have others use your content, maintaining the byline and links to your site ;) This works wonders for me!
PFI - pay for inclusion search engines, AltaVista, askjeeves/teoma, FAST, INKTOMI, Mamma
And maybe it goes without saying, but I'll say it anyway: validate your HTML, add new content every week, ask for links from other sites, and always do what you say you are going to do.
Good luck, WFN:)
Our company prepares "hand outs" - things like calendars and bookmarks that we send to previous clients and give away at trade shows and events. Our web address is prominantly displayed.
Postcards advertising your site and the great things you can find there - "we have great tasting nectar!" Distribute as above.
Other things like magnets and pencils with your address on them are great. Things that people keep at their desk and look at everyday are the best (long lasting flowers.)
Blow-in cards for local magazines or newspapers. A one-color card can be quite cheap - which is good because your response rate might be quite low.
Some yellow pages or other print directories will include your web address in your listing. People have a chance to preview your work or product when deciding who to call.
Every time you include your address and phone number on something your web address should be there too. Stationary, return address envelopes, lables, etc.
All of the above things should be attractively designed so that parties that are interested in your service are attracted. You can't really "drive" people to visit your site but you can figure out who is likely to be interested and then attract them like bees to nectar!
