I suppose everybody has seen the verified by visa ads on TV by now. Has anybody signed up for the program as a merchant.

My understanding is that the password screen will only pop up if the consummer has actually signed up for verified by visa program.

In one way it adds peace of mind, to all those consumers who are paranoid of using their Visa card online. On the other hand, if it is not setup properly, then its one more barrier in making the sale.

Any experiences with the program.

There is another thread about VBV:
[webmasterworld.com...]

I am not using the popup but an inline frame, because popups are being blocked a lot (I've tried the popups for a few days).

Also, the VBV screen asking for the password is still optional, I have seen orders dropping when I switched it on.

There are still many problems with it, at least at our end. Often there are just errors returned, and for international orders it's often not just a password, but in fact the card holder receives an automated call to his mobile phone and needs to enter his password there (in Spain). That comes with errors and timeouts etc...

I am using it for a few months now and Visa in my region is not even able to come up with the small print for it ("that's confidential")...

We are still receiving our orders from Nigeria daily, but now they are "Verified by Visa" ;-)

At the end I don't think that this is changing anything for the merchant, but rather for the customers.

Imagine that you find a transaction on your statement that has not been made by you. You call Visa or your bank and tell them that you have no idea about it.

Now they won't tell you that you still have to pay for it, because your Visa 3D password has been used, but they would ask you for an affirmation that you are truly not aware of the transaction and you swear that you have no idea. After that, they credit the amount back to your account, and bang the merchant receives a chargeback.

Of course they would not dig in their own pocket to cover the cost, why should they?
