I am looking for a shopping cart with a very specific (but simple) spec ...

  • The client wants to add items and categories offline, then synchronise them with their web site. The offline package also ideally ought to take care of resizing and compressing images.
  • It needs to be capable of handling 10,000+ items
  • It needs to be capable of handling multiple currencies
  • It needs to be capable of handling flexible shipping costs

Am currently thinking of using commerce.cgi, modifying it and writing a Windows-based back end. I would really much rather buy in a stable solution, though.

Anybody know of an existing product that does all of this stuff elegantly?

Can't say as I know of any cart that'll do what you want right out of the box. Maybe I haven't looked hard enough but the rule of thumb I go by is that I expect it to do the basics of listing categories and products and allow purchasing via several different credit cards. After that I anticipate a wide open field of what the carts come with.

The more specific you want the setup/functionality of the cart the more likely you are going to have to customize an existing solution. Which obviously translates into more money.

I'd suggest you find a good off-the-shelf product and pay for someone to modify the cart to your specs. You will most likely need someone to write the offline part.

We've discussed X-Cart, osCommerce, Able-Commerce, and a variety of other products on this board. Any one of them could be modified to suit your needs. There may also be someone here who knows a product that is more closely aligned with what you're after so hang-tight and perhaps you'll get what you're looking for.

Luckily, I have relevant skills to take care of this. Just wanted to avoid reinventing the wheel and save a little time if possible.

As you are UK based, you could try Accessweb. Its little known, but it will fulfill your list there, out-of-the-box
