I've recently had a couple of customers email me that they placed an order, but I have no record of their order. They have opted-in to my email list, so I know they visited the site.

I'm just wondering how to best go about preventing this loss of sales.

I think the problem is occuring at the point of form/order completion, when they hit the order button, but maybe something on the form is incomplete, or they go to another site before the info is transmitted.

Perhaps a notice on the order form that they will receive a confirmation email upon ordering, and to re-order if they do not receive one within 10 minutes?

Any other ideas?

It is quite likely that those clients have not completed the whole process. You should make it clearer how many steps they have to go through to place an order and where exactly they are. Especially toward the end of the process it is useful to stress that they have not finished the process yet and they still have to do this and that...

Confirmation email is a must for any e-commerce site, I believe. Have a copy of it sent to you, it is a useful backup should anything go wrong with your site.
