i've heard you can re register detagged domain names and i am especially interested in detagged domain names that still get plenty of traffic to them... What programmes or websites are available to assess the traffic going to these detagged domains?

AFAIK there's no such software available, although someone else may know differently.

Remember that although a .uk domain may be detagged, it still technically belongs to the Registrant and is not available for general sale.

Nominet will eventually contact the Registrant to confirm they no longer want the domain and if they don't, the domain will be made available for sale after a varying amount of time.

detagged domains don't (or shouldn't) get any traffic as the nameserver records will be deleted. the name will be "in limbo" until nominet get round to releasing it - this could be 6 months or could be 2 or 3 years. plenty more info in the domains forum here.

It is true that many detagged domains going down the normal route of failed to be renewed-detagged-suspended-deleted will have dropped out of most search engines by the time that Nominet get round to finally deleting them.

However, Nominet are now speeding up the process considerably and also numerous names are going straight to suspended status without ever getting detagged. We have recently seen some such names, including valuable single word generics, be deleted 6 weeks after having been in full use and with their search engine positions still intact.

"detagging a domain name" is that when a registerd company that has bought a domain name and has used it, goes say "bankrupt" and the name will be comming up for sale again. So the domain name is sort of hanging awaiting a new owner. I am on a steep learning curve and there is a lot to learn.

Detagging is when the Nominet member who holds the domain tag chooses to disassociate themselves from the domain.

It basically means that although the domain is still registered to the respective company, it is not hosted by anyone and will not work.

A domain which is detagged is most likely this way because the owner has not renewed it, although this isn't necessarily the only reason!

After a varying period of time, Nominet will contact the domain's owner to see if they wish to renew the domain. If they don't, it will be made available for sale after another varying period of time.

Hope that all adds up - it's been a long day! :(
