Name Servers, "glue" at the root and registering an NS...

I have a question regarding how one goes about registering a name server...

Previously I had four name servers registered with NetSol. They have "expired" those registrations and I cannot find a way to renew them or re-submit them.

We primarily are using Dotster currently anyway, so it might be a moot point (and intend to switch off NetSol entirely in a month or so).

I used some DNS Tools to check out my name servers and one problem that they penalized me heavily for was that my name servers were not listed with the root name servers ("no glue") which they explained meant that it made it more difficult to do a lookup and slowed lookups down considerably, among other things (they score the servers as well as provide a breakdown on a couple dozen items).

My questions are these, is there a service that one can use to register name servers? Does anyone know if (and if so how) Dotster provides this service? Am I stuck going back to NetSol for this, and if so, how do I do it? Is it really that important that a nameserver be registered?

Thanks in advance,
- Robert

I don't know about Dotster, but my registrar made that an easy and integrated part of setting up my DNS when I switched from using their hosted DNS to hosting my own. I wasn't aware that it was possible to set up DNS *without* those glue records.

You register name servers with your Registrar of the domain that will be made the NS, no one else can help you. And Dotster does provide this service. Some registrars don't.

Want to register name server: ns1.example.com
Person would need to go to the registrar of example.com.

Hi Lisa,

Thanks... I guess I just need to check their site more thoroughly or email them. I've got about 60 domain names with them, using 4 name servers, but I guess it isnt automatic (name servers being registered with them).

Thanks again,
Rob
