.md domains - wish I could afford it

$299/year?! - Ouch!

Let me vent my frustration.

Maybe I am late in noticing but last week I realized .md TLD were available. This would be perfect since I specialize in sites for a specialty in the medical field. But at $299 a year!? Whoa! Sheez, is this a blatant attempt to cash in on the money doctors make or what? I see no other reason why they would offer it so high.

I can't imagine this price lasting for long. Anyone think it will come down?

On the other hand, at $299 a pop, I bet nearly all domain name speculators (<-censored opinion) are priced out its range and many great names are available. I would get one if the annual fee wasn't $299 as well.

Zapatista!

I'm not sure who own this now but a couple of years ago I was asked to make contact and determine what they might want for a joint venture with a prominent medical site that focuses on Docs.

Greed was in the air.

THanks EliteWeb - I'll go check it out and report back. Hope you're right. it would be nice to have "KeyWord.md and not key-word.md or some other poor substitute.

Whheellpp, you were right EliteWeb.

Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!

I just bought the holy grail of keywords for my medical specialty and it's nice that it's .md - really a good fit.

Now, I just need to figure out what I am going to do with it. Several possibilities.

EliteWeb, thanks again. <joke>I don't care what anybody else says about you - you're okay in my book!</joke>

I've used a dotmd domain name for a few years now. The renewal price for a year, posted on register.dotmd.com is $99/year for "non-premium" names, and $399 for premium names. And some obvious super names were much higher in the past.

I haven't heard recent news about the dispute between the parliament of Moldavia/Moldova versus the people who apparently hold exclusive rights to market .md in North America... but the possibility of a lingering dispute should be kept in mind. In the past, people holding .md domain names have been sent confusing emails from both parties, claiming bad things about the other.

I agree with Zapatista, that the current dotmd premium prices are too high, and I think they'll come down eventually. Doctors will pay a higher price for a vanity email address like firstname@lastname.md, but a ridiculous price will inhibit those kinds of sales.

I'm intrigued about the ramifications (if any) of registering directly with the Republic of Moldova. Could someone who has registered there, and set up hosting successfully, please post your experiences? Are there any problems with response time to display a page in the browser? Or delay or language difficulty in getting administrative changes made to the domain owners contact info? etc.

Have any North Americans here, registered a .md domain, directly via the Republic of Moldova? Or changed their registration provider from dotMD to nic.md? Any ramifications or problems encountered?
