Hello all

As the description says, sorry if this is the dumbest question this month (or any other month!)...

A clients domain (which they registered themselves) is about to expire. I only found this out by doing a WHOIS query at internic and following the trail.

The company they originally registered the domain with seems to have gone out of business and their URL directs to a leading commercial domain registry.

From here, is seems as though I am able to renew the domain with no proof of ownership whatsoever. I am just wondering if I take this course of action will the renewal be valid? Can 'anyone' simply pay to renew a domain with no reference to the current registered owner?

Obviously, I have been asked to do this by the owner (my client) but do not want to be in a situation where I have paid to renew the domain and it is taken by another as the renewal is somehow 'invalid'.

short answer is yes.

Better answer try getting the domain's admin address changed to yours or your clients go to godaddy and transfer the domain to them, then the domain is in your control, that way you have the power ;)

Thanks Dave

The client is actually shown as the admin address and all is fine on the actual registration.

It just seems odd that 'anyone' can go to the site and renew the domain. Don't you have to prove that you are the owner or are acting on behalf of the owner?

No,

have you ever be bought a drink in a bar by a lady that you didn't Know. The barman still takes their money ;)

I must admit Dave, I live in hope of being bought a drink by anyone in a bar! :)

So I guess that if I renew this domain the barman won't pocket the money, tell me that I never ordered a drink and give it to someone else?

In short, if I pay for it the renewal for my client will be legit and the domain will remain the property of the current registered owner (ie. my client)?
