Hello

There is domain name that has been registered and is not in use and is shortly to expire. I would like to contact the owner and offer to buy it. The domain only has a contact name and no other details appart from mentioning the ISP (i think) as 9NETAVENUE (uk company)

Any tips on tracking and contacting this mutha. I have emailed a default info@domain but it got bounced.

Cheers

Contact the company and find out what the default e-mail actually is. Some domains have the catch all turned off. I have had a small amount of success with trying a couple of generic prefixes, like webmaster etc.

Have you tried a whois on the authorative server for the domain?

Contact 9NETAVENUE and see if they would put you in contact with the original buyer. If you approach this as a bona fide business approach they might go for it.

Failing that perhaps ask them to act as a bartering agent on your behalf This would almost certainly include a fee. If you could convince them that they only needed to send an e-mail asking if they owner wanted to sell for a small fee I think that you would have some success.

Personally I would not give out details of one client to any other interestd party but I would contact them on their behalf for a small fee.

Failing that..Jungle Drums?

I don't know if this will help, but if the 9netavenue you mention is the web hosting company originally known as 9netave.com, they were bought out by XO Communications (xo.com). I think XO is having its own financial problems right now - they currently seem to be operating while in a bankruptcy reorganization mode.

No, no, NO! Haven't you read the RFCs? According to the RFCs, the only e-mail that MUST be valid is postmaster@domain. THAT is the default.

Why not just wait until it expires and buy it then?

Suppose I did not want to miss the boat and I have heard of people waiting to snap up such names and I dont know how to get that done, not at the speeds/methods I have read about about.

Thanks CHC I will do that.

Typically if it is very close to expiry I recommend to use a service such as the one VeriSign offers that automatically aquires the domain upon its release back into the public after expiry. Calling the owner only shows interest in the name, and thus dollar value. I think you would much rather pay $69 for it than $1000 or some number like that the guy will spin off the top of his head. Just be patient and wait for it to expire.

By the way, 9NetAve (it is/was in fact an Italian / Canadian company) has gone through a long line of aquisitions of its customer base and assets, and it is now owned and operated under the DataPeer company of New Jersy. I know because I have been a customer of the hosting company for the past 4 or so years.

Shak

I have contacted 9net who have passed the details on. I have heard nothing yet. I can always buy the same with another TLD. Will just have to wait and see.

Well, you could also buy the same name under another TLD, UNLESS of course, the interest you're expressing in the current name sparks the current owner with the same thought that just hit me ....

Domains go for under 9.00 US at godaddy, etc. but someone wants this current domain name from me ... hmmm, would it be worth a quick trip and some pocket change to snarf up the same name under other TLD's and then talking up a package deal? I wonder .....

After all, far stranger things have been known to happen when wheeling and dealing commences.

but I'm feeling confident that, having now found
webmasterworld, things are gonna get a whole lot better.

Rich, you suggested waiting for expiry but basically the names get de-tagged when they expire and they don't come back into the pot for *an undetermined period*. Not sure if it's the same with .coms but certainly is for .co.uk's.

I was after a name which was connected to an event (for example: WorldCup2002.co.uk) and the person who registered it never paid the company. So, they detagged it and said that I could buy it. But I wasn't allowed and even though they told Nominet the 'company' who registered the name never existed and failed to contact them, it just lies in limbo to this day - detagged.

Of course, at some point it will suddenly become available but will be i. first come first served and ii. useless now!

Anyway, that doesn't help as the writer of this thread as the name owner may renew it anyway. This seems to be a problem in that people fail to set-up e-mail forwarding on names that they are not using. I have tried to contact people before to see if they'll sell, but the Registering companies don't want to help you.
