Checking if a domain has been registered before

How does one:

• See if a domain has been registered before, and
  
• If it has, how can I see if it has been naughty?

I think deleteddomains.com support's the first function, second it's quite hard, i would use archive.org, and third for the second thing, i would do searches on Usenet, and SE'S for the domain.

adding... type the domain (without the extention) into Google and Alltheweb and see what dirt (if any) comes up.

Works exceptionally well for identifying scam domains, email scams and just any old scam.

I don't beleive there is any way to check historical whois data is there? I can't find a thing on this domain other than it was deleted a month ago....
