How do I make a DNS entry without the www

I am trying to add a DNS entry to allow [websitename.com...] to be resolved the same as [websitename.com...] but am not having much luck. I can obviously make [anything.websitename.com...] resolve to the correct IP address but it doesn't seem to like it when I want to do it with out the host name (eg www.). I have tried

@ IN CNAME WWWSERVER

as a DNS entry but have not had much luck. I have also tried using DNS manager (I prefer to edit the database file directly) via NT Server but can not see any thing there that helps

Any ideas?

Just create a new address record. The same way you created www.whatever.com. You would create address record, leaving the host name blank, where you would otherwise put www, and redirect to your ip address.

NOT A CNAME RECORD!

Hope this helps. The example given is from RaQ3 Unix server, if your using something different, it may not be the same..

Very welcome. I knew nothing when I started managing my own server, had to hack my way thru everything. Feel free to drop me an email if you have any other questions, I'll try and save you the headache.
