Does anyone know if numbers in domain names (i.e. www3.mydomain.com or www.go2california.com) affect one way or the other the search engine ranking of a site?

Yes and no. Some engines deny there is any connection. However some use this IP information. I have lots of domains on one IP and Google doesn't care. It handles each domain separately and I can say I don't see a problem with Google. But it certainly is an easy way for a search engine to double check / validate.
