I am hoping to get in quick with the new dot eu domains. Anyone know when they are going to be available to buy.

As things have not yet been finalised no one knows for sure the actual launch date. There are many companies already taking "pre-registrations" but as no registrars have actually been appointed yet they are akin to these ridiculous companies selling land on the Moon or letting you name a star. Do not pay any money to these companies. I am afraid that you just have to be patient and wait until more information is available.

Thanks CHC

I was just about to buy a pre-registration but not now. I have heard that the suffix might be available in the winter, is this just a rumour then

I'm glad that you didn't get caught. Most of these pre-registration sites are the "fly by night ex-double glazing sales managers jumping on the Internet bandwagon" types but now even 123reg.co.uk has got in on the act. I am surprised at them, they should know better.

I use 123-reg for my url supplier so had a lucky escape.

Does anyone have an opinion on how popular the dot eu suffix will be. Can it be a money maker if you buy on the first day. Any thoughts guys?

dot EU is going to be absolutely MASSIVE, I am a member of a number of communities and the feedback I am getting is Mid 2003.

The big debate doing the rounds at present is working out who is going to run the registry, apparently the EU comission or whichever body handles things was due to put it out to tender this summer, but things are running a bit late from what I can gather.

As for making money, yes Registrars will make money and domain speculators will make money, but KEEP AWAY from even thinking about registering domains such as Coca-Cola.eu if you get the chance, simply put the days of registering trademarked domains are GONE.

On another note if anyone is interested, I am quite keen to invest in setting up a .EU registrar or Registration service provider.

They just closed registry applications before I left. So that means that the Registry will be choosen soon. After the registry is selected, they will annouce time lines.
