I wanted to know if a US firm can get their name as a uk domain? They have a site that they want to have a UK version, but they have no offices in the UK. Is this possible through a UK based service. If the site gets hosted on a UK server and we let the isp register it will this work?

UK have no draconian measures, register what you like as long as you are not cybersquatting.

the nominet site should give all the information you need. If it's not on their site then contact them, they've always been really helpful to me in the past..

yes, a US company (or anyone else) can register a .co.uk - just register it the same as you would register a .com

you should be able to host the .co.uk domain on US or UK servers without any problem.

www.nic.uk has the basic rules for domain registrations. look at the list of members and register your name through one of them. check the terms and conditions carefully prior to registering the name as some companies have hidden costs and restrictions on transfers etc. any company offering domain names for 1p is most likely to have loads of hidden charges. look to pay no more than £10 for 2 years, fully inclusive, with free transfers etc.
