In a recent press release from Verisign they quote, "[we have] 13.6 million active domain names in .com, .net, .org, .tv, .cc, and .ws".

Now I start to deduce....

Network Solutions has 9,485,895 active domains in "COM, NET, ORG, INFO, BIZ, and US" as of 7/11/2002, so the question I have is how many in .TV? That is one stat they have not released in over a year. But this means "TV, CC, and WS" equal 4,114,105. And I know that Verisign's eNic (.CC) has 581,147 domains. So that mean "TV and WS" are at 3,532,958 domains.

I know that .WS has 253,029 domains. (That leaves 3,279,929 left to account for)

And the last time .TV release stats was May of 2001, and at that point they had 473,168 domains.

That leaves 2,806,761 domains unaccounted for. Oh this is fishy. Where are those extra 2.8 Million domains they quoted?

source for stats:
quote above: verisign press release
com, net, org, info, biz, and us: name intellgence (aka my numbers)
cc: enic.cc
ws: .ws press release
tv: .tv press release

i think netsol is considering the expired domain names in the active list as they have not yet released them !!. I think they want to make $$$ on them , else there could be no reason they bot greatdomains.

Verisign's last quarter 10K filing contained the 13.6 million number, with a note (quoted here [icannwatch.org] ) that this did not include ~1.7 million expired but not deleted names. Possibly their next filing this month will contain up to date numbers.

Ok, that press release that mentioned those 13.6 million active domain names has been erased from the Internet. Please check your cache and send me a copy. I wonder why they would delete that press release. I even searched the verisign press center. Nothing there. It is completely gone.
