I am trying to get hold of a domainname that expired March 2002
According to the registrar they hold expired domainnames for 40 to 50 days
before deleting but this has not happend.
Is it a wise move to contact the registrar and ask them to release
the domain

has anybody experience in this

thanx
Pete

Well NetSol usually releases their names as they have hundreds of thousands to release. But if the domain is at another registrar and it is good they may sweep it under the rug and forget about it. Looks like maybe you are watching a good name. After 45 days the registrar has to pay for the domain for another year. So they will not be motivated to release it now.

For a Netsol domain I had to wait 90 days before it was released, I dont know if they've changed since then but thats just pure bull.

As of a month ago it was still 90 days or atleast thats what the "support" people said.

i suggest you can spider the domain using some spidering cgi script put in cron of the server , which automatically checks the domain after a predefined time interval,
But this might be against the terms of some registrars as it increses traffic load on their servers,
else if you dont mind spending $$$ you can try back-ordering with the help of back ordering websites.

I was "hunting" a domain that exipered in May 20th, 2002.

Everyday I checked the whois database, to see when I could have bought the expired domain.

Unfortunately on June 20th, 2002 it was suddenly bought by a company based in Hong kong.
I think this company is very skilled in taking over expired domains.

So that my experience is that ONE MONTH is enough!

If you are tracking a domain and the Whois says "Local whois DB must be out of date", this means that the domain will drop within 6 days of the 'Updated Date'.
