Restricted Content Group

Because of the inadequacies in the proposed technical and business measures to actually promote kid-friendly content, the evaluation team does not recommend selecting a .kids domain in the current phase of the TLD program. In addition, because of the controversy surrounding, and poor definition of the hoped-for benefits of, .xxx, we also recommend against its selection at this time.

Restricted Commercial Group

.travel
.pro
Most proposals in this group are not technically suited to merit selection.

Special-Purpose TLDs
.co-op
.coop
.union
.museum
.air
.health
The applications of these appear to be technically, financially sound in the context of their special-purpose limited objectives.

New Services TLDs

.geo
.dir
.yp
Reading the recommendations, it appears that .geo might make the cut, and ICAAN like the idea of .dir but put it on hold.

This article [zdnet.com] lists a few more in the "General Purpose" category:

.info, .site, cash, .global, .secure, .ebiz, .ecom, .home, .dot, .info, .site, .spot, .surf

I missed them on ICAAN, they are listed under "Strings Requested" while .web and .biz are listed as "Preferred String."

According to USA Today, on Thursday, seven new suffixes were approved by the Internet Corp. for Assigned Names and Numbers:

.biz, .name, .pro, .museum, .coop, .aero, and .info

Any of these look appealing? .web would have been nice.

And lets have a closer look:

.biz - had to happen
.name - a risky but creative move. I could see people going for their own name.
.pro - doesn't set the heart a patter now does it?
.info - ok. Might be interesting.
.museum - huh?
.coop - what?
.aero - what on earth?

No .kids? and no .xxx? Absurd! The perfect opportunity to box in content, clean up the web, and they blow it. .xxx alone could have sent domain registrars into the stratosphere.

Brett, looking at this list, I'm wondering if these few were thrown out there as a teaser, just to see what would happen. More can always be approved at a later date if this works - which would give a definite advantage to those with foreknowledge.

I can see some possibilities with 3 of these, but I wonder whether it will be clear what these mean, or if people will still tack on com - like internet.biz.com

I think that will be a huge problem. I'm only vaguely interested in .info, but only as a "for print use" domain. None of these make my checkbook throb.

The .coop one I automatically assumed to be a cute little abbreviation for "cooperative." After taking a third look, I am wondering if chicken.coop is still available.

I bet Monkey.biz could go for 30 to 40 million. Chicken.coop would be in the hundreds of thousands range.

They say the .pro is going to be reserved for doctors/lawyers and phd's. So they want to give the elite their own domain and box in content, yet they couldn't see fit to do XXX or .kids? I was really hoping for .kids. I want to do a kids site, but with COPPA rules in place, I'm not going to wade into that thicket.

I don't see what is so bad with all these new TLDs; only people who spend too much time on the net will find .info or .pro less exciting than .com . The rest of the world will (ie the paying public) are unlikely to care a great deal.

Besides, british.museum looks much better and is more memorable than thebritishmuseum.ac.uk . In my opinion.
