Finding the registrar

I have a client who's site was held hostage by a rogue web designer. The guy built a crappy site for him, and then disappeared.

They have since hired me to rebuild the site which I am doing, but moving the domain name could be a problem. The client is listed as the admin contact, and the rogue designer as the technical contact. When I do a whois check it only tells me the current host the current site is with, not who registered the domain name. How can I find out who the registrar is so I can try and get the domain transferred?

Appreciate any help.

When I do a whois from a shell account it tells me who its registered with, when you find out just contact them and follow their process of changing the domain information. It usually involves a letter and a photocopy of a ID ;0

Legster,
Just pick a new registrar, it doesn't matter which one. Then fill in the transfer form. They will send an email to the admin's email address to confirm. Your existing register may also do this to confirm that you are leaving.

Coming and go is very easy.
