My product, but no domain name to match it

I have a program we are ready to roll out and we have the name for it, however all the domain names are taken. What method should I go about for selecting a alternative domain name for the product.

Has anyone ran into this situation? Currently we have it setup for xxxx.hostname.com but that wont cut it as a final product.

Well there is no reason you can't use a sub-directory for your product. That is how must companies handle it. If your product is really great that will also boost the rest of your site.

Check out the product page for Bind. Two sub-directories down and it holds a PR8.

But if you really want a domain name to match the product. Keep looking. Or perhaps approach the owner of a name and offer a few hundred for it.

Or do like temoa and get your in house programmer to get the computer to make some random string for you to use.

1) add "program" or "software" to the name

2) abbreviate

3) use keywords

4) add #1AAA to the beginning :)

I'm assuming the domain names are being used for something. In that case, if it matches what they're being used for, it might be wise, if it hasn't already been done, to check trademarks registered for the particular name with the patent office, just to be on the safe side.

Another option could be to use a company name for the domain and put the particular piece of software into a directory. If other products are added they can be in additional directories, with branding having already been established with the success of the first one.
