Anybody rate this extension for setting up a commercial web site, as the.com has a squatter.

You could be misinterpreted with .org for purely commercial purposes.

Why not try that .usa thats meant to be available? Assuming you are in the US

The .usa is an un-accredited scam extension... Not sure where the thread about it here is, but scam domain extensions in general have cost people millions of dollars in worthless domain registrations

Before buying any "new domains," make sure and check that the extension is either a properly administered country extension (Which is .us for the United States, and used primarily by state and local government sites, like state.ak.us), or is a proper ICANN-approved top level domain (.com, .net, .org, .biz, .info and .name for now, AFAIK)

get a different domain, with a .com, and build your site's online branding.

done well, your site will show up first for a search for your keywords on google, before squatted and keywords domains. that's precisely what makes google so loveable and efficient.

nowadays, i would not recommand getting a domain without getting at least the .com + .net + local extension, if it's a commercial site and if it's important to you...

i beg to differ,

i questioned a few of my friends (not in the business) and they had no clue as to the difference between .com and .org and .net
although they kind of understood that .co.uk meant a british site.

i think sometimes we are too close to things to see.

i'm not involved in radio advertising but my own feeling is that dot com is needed for that medium because thats the perception

but for search engine listings i don't think it matters, people read the title not the address

>> people read the title not the address

precisely. and they click on the first result too. SE high ranking is more important than anything else, as far as i'm concerned.

by "getting at least the .com + .net" i meant "so there is no chance for squatting nor competition nor confusion".

>> they had no clue as to the difference between .com and .org and .net

often true, yet "internet" still often is confused with ".com". (see [webmasterworld.com...] ). i'd say getting anything else than .com is ok, but not if the .com is already gone, usually by a competitor on a similar topic.
