domain transfer at godaddy

I want to transfer the ownership of a domain registered with godaddy to another registrant, also at godaddy.

In step 1 I get the option to transfer it to a new user or an existing user. I want to transfer it to an existing user, but a password is required for that. I don't get it, should I ask the user for his password to transer the domain or what?

How do I transfer the domain name?

thanks

The person has to "request" the transfer. It's up to the other guys end to initiate it. You'll then get a email asking to approve the xfer.

...least that is the way it works with every other registrar I've used.

Terminology problem.

johnd isn't asking how to transfer a domain between registrars, he's asking how to change the Registrant contact info(without changing registrars) because he's given/sold the domain to someone else. Go Daddy calls that "Transfer of Ownership", which no doubt adds to the confusion in situations like this.

(By the way, Go Daddy charges $19.95 for Transfer of Ownership, and requires notorized signatures from the new and old registrants. That's a "feature" that's going to bite a lot of speculators on the ass.)

Anyway, the answer to the original question is: Don't use an existing userid. Make up a new userid/password combination, and give that to the new Registrant. Then get started on the notarized part of the transaction.

Once the Transfer of Ownership is complete, the new userid/password will become active, and the new registrant should use the "Change Login Info" link on their Domain Manager screen to change the userid/password to something that the old registrant doesn't know.

You know, Go Daddy has a domain services department for this kind of thing. The phone number is (480) 505-8899.

Ok, thanks. Is there any way around the written agreement thing?

I just had a nightmare of a night with them over something relatively simple that's urgent. Never again - form letters get tiresome, and I'm not about to spend $7.50 starting price for phone support when I get return email on every_little_thing from another registrar. Once bitten twice shy - never again.

Yes, imagine my situation where I live in Western Australia, and I was buying a domain off a US owner. Needless to say, it involved many international faxes.

Never again.
