from the site:- "The .usa domain names are currently being registered for activation in 2002. They will initially be viewed on the Internet by making a slight alteration to your web browser."

I would say it may be one of these unsanctioned domains names although I could be wrong. Interesting that the corporate address is listed in Calafornia but the dotusa.com domain is registered to a British company.

I am a little sus myself.

I agree with Woz...be wary of stuff like this. It reminds me of the multilingual domain names VeriSign has been foisting on an unsuspecting public...the names may sound like a great idea, but without a specific, hard to find, browser plug-in (that probably only works with IE), nobody is going to see your site. Why bother?

Weren't they going to open up top level .us domain names soon?

Related - but another scam - new.net - register any type of domain - .shop, .law .etc .etc

The thing that really is surprising is that they are advertised on theregister.co.uk ...

I personally feel that the domain name system needs some improvement but scams like alternic, new.net and .usa just con the unwary.

What is the point of a domain that the search engines will not index for starters?

Stumbled across this [bizreport.com] today...
November 20, 2001
Washington-based NeuStar Inc. today officially took control of America's sovereign ".us" Internet addressing suffix. NeuStar announced that it had successfully moved the ".us" registry onto its own secure servers and was prepared to officially begin managing the .us domain.

JSpade - welcome to WmW,

Nice to see that someone in the media had picked up on this type of scam also. Check the dates though - the WmW report was 7 days earlier ;)

Though the guy with $12,000 lost on domain speculating... what an incredibly stupid thing to do - investing that kind of money in something that he clearly knows nothing about. I wouldn't spend that kind of money investing in "fine wine" without seeking independent expert advice, because I know nothing about "fine wine" (getting quite good at cheap drinking wine though ;))

Though I hope he recuperates his losses - difference between learning from mistakes, and being taken for a ride.

Gethan:

I'm out a bunch of money. After I read the
article I asked them to cancel my "domains."
They did, but haven't refunded a dime!

JSpade: Sorry to hear that - I hope a lot less than 12K. Sounds like one for the lawyers - and the FTC. Good luck.

JSPade, hah that was quick. Ive known so many people who have purchased those type of domains and tell there clients to goto www.whatever first and click the button then you can see the website.

The guy had 20 hits a month (probably all himself) once i did search engine stuff on him and got him a .com he got quite a few more ;)

At that point, she made contact with the trade commission. Because Ms. Freeman charged her purchases by credit card, she has been able to recover her money

From the NY article - so contact your credit card companies if you brought these domains - and if you didn't be prepared for higher charges on your merchant account :(

It's a scam and the courts (rightly) shut down the site, but as far as I can tell no-one was prosecuted even though it was estimated that about $1 million had been conned out of people. What's to stop anyone else doing the same? Where's the deterrent? Surely such a fraud must be illegal, so why no prosecution?
