I almost could respect that, if Beckstrom took a pay cut to take the job . . except for the certainty that, even if he did, such high salaries corrode the public trust of what it means to be, and to support, NPOs.

A lot of NPOs have become nothing more than gravy troughs for their upper management. They are only non-profit from the standpoint that they don't have stockholders and don't pay dividends. Their management staffs are frequently making an absolute killing in salaries, benefits and bonuses.
