Domain Name Wire recently reported the $80,000.00 sale of OMG.com by Sedo.

It now appears from the WhoIs record that the buyer was Yahoo!, which runs a celebrity talk/gossip site at [omg.yahoo.com...]

Is this a smart "brand buy" by Yahoo!?

On the face of it, it seams as if they have done well. They might now concentrate on pushing OMG as a brand whilse retaining its links within Yahoo!

When it comes to pushing a service like OMG, it will help big time to have OMG.com as opposed to an OMG subdomain as part of yahoo.com

From a marketing point of view it is also very wise, it will be far easier to track user progress to the site if they do any sort of marketing campaigne for OMG.com although 80K is a lot of money simply to be able to count clicks.

80K for a 3 letter popular phrase is a steal for a company that would spend millions for a good domain name.
