Which name server is used?

We're hosting a site for a client and we requested that they forward and mask their domain name (www.fancyname.com) pointing at our hosting location (www.oursite.com/fancyname).

Since we're hosting the site, do they need to set up THEIR domain account to point to OUR name servers? That is, do they use the OUR name servers which are on the hosting side?

Or do they set this up on their side, retaining their name servers?

I can only give an opinion based upon what my different registrars offer me however they are all very similar.

My main registrar gives me the option of using their servers and then pointing the domain name at whichever url I want to...e.g. I can point example2.com at example1.com and the name example2.com will not be seen..if I want to point example2.com at example1.com/myfancyname all I have to do is insert that specific url and job done.

I am also offered a couple of other options:

1. Retaining example2.com name meanwhile pointing at example1.com/myfancyname

2. Retaining example2.com name meanwhile pointing at example1.com/myfancyname PLUS the facility to include my own titlebar and meta tags if I want to.

If your client has their own hosting at the moment and have a cpanel and want to point example2.com at example1.com/myfancyname, they can do it from their cpanel.

The cleanest and fastest way is to do it from your registrars, some do charge a nominal fee for this service, many do it for free, and by doing it from the registrars your client will not require hosting services unless they wish to keep their e-mail address as example2.com?

If they want to do this then they will need to point from their hosting service therefore are you supplying them with an e-mail account/facility?

Caveat!

This is how I do things and they work very well, I'm absolutely sure others may advise various different types of server re-directs but pointing from the registrars server is usually the quickest and it's also very friendly for the search engines in that they recognise example2.com as a valid name but will automatically point it to example2.com/myfancyname.

Hope this helps.
