You also have to wait until the domain is within 3 months of expiring before you can add the 2 years.
Now, call me ultra cautious - but all my really important domains I keep with at least 5 years on them at all times - just in case the worst happens.
Does anyone know if it's possible to renew a .co.uk domain for more than 2 years?
Possibly if I use a US registrar instead?
They are controlled by Nominet and you can check on their website.
But almost nobody actually registers directly with Nominet, and whichever registrar you use should have an option to auto-renew domains before they expire.
I have several UK domains (registered through a major US registrar) and have no problem with this, but if an error occurred and a domain was allowed to expire then I believe Nominet would contact the registered owner at the registered email address.
...
I realise things can be set to "auto renew", but I never use that feature - I always manually renew my domains well before they expire.
Auto renew won't work if your credit card details have changed without you realising - and sometimes it fails for who knows what reason - valuable domains are far too important to trust to auto renew.
As for Nominet contacting me if it expires - well, they might do - but I don't want to count on it.
The 'worst case scenario' I'm trying to hedge against is that I'm lying in hospital in a coma for 6 months - when I wake up, I'm going to be in a real bad mood to find my domain expired!
If that happened, I wouldn't be around to receive Nominets warning email.
