As usual the domain name I want is taken.

widgets.com

What do people think is better getting the ".net" or some other suffix, only ".com" is taken.

Or would it be better to make it

1000widgets.com

If for example there are 1000 or them.

The domain lenght is 16 chacters, this is without mt 1000, with the number (1000) that would make it 20 charcters long.

I wouldn't build a commercial site on the .net without owning the .com. A hobby or other site would be ok. You'd be better off coming up with another name altogether and branding it to your website. You can always use seo techniques for the domain to perform well in the search engines. I'd hate to use a 1000oooooooooooooooo.com domain.

There actually are established sites that intentionally use a .net domain name, even though they owned the corresponding .com and .org variants from the very beginning (for instance, sourceforge.net).

But in your case I wouldn't recommend it because the .com variant is taken. This could cause a myriad of troubles later. However, if the .com variant is just parked, you might try to contact the current owner and offer him to buy the domain name.

Thank you for your feedback.

The problem is that all of the variations i want are taken, the one variation I like has the .net domain available.

It is not a commercial website, I am not selling anything, more of a hobby/tourism website with adsense.

1000 or the number I am think off, this is how many of them they have.

This is an example examplecountry.com

I can get examplecountry.net or .org or .info.

Or I can register for example: 1000examplecountry.com

The domain name is parked, not even a landing page. I will send them an email, but because it is a hobby site, I can't afford to pay a lot.

I thought the domain name I wanted was going to expire end of this month, but unfortunatly they extended a couple days ago for another year

My other concern is if I send them an email asking to buy teir domain name, they could register the others, .net. .org etc etc or ask for a lot of money.

Thank you again.

I also didn't want to use hypens as the concensus is that they are not the best to use.

for example: example-country.com

Or is this the best option?

ExampleCountry.com is likely to get some type-in traffic.

I'd go for the dot com of whatever you settle on.

Since it's just a hobby, I don't see much harm in using the .net or .org. If you are concerned about the .com owner snaffling them up, why don't you reg them both first before asking him to sell the .com. Domain registrations are really cheap, even for a hobby.

Consider something like
widgetinfo.com
widgetworld.com
widgetplace.com
etc...

When someone links to you thay really have no choice but to use the keyword in the link text.

How about 4Widgets.com ?
Widgets4U.com?

I have a widgets4u.com type domain. It gets absolutely zero type-in traffic. So be prepared for a lot of seo work and branding.
