Absent a court order, is it possible to find out the name of a website owner who registers their name using private whois registration?

You can "try" asking the WhoIs privacy service provider to forward a message. Depending on the message and the provider and "the moment" someone might accommodate something like forwarding a significant offer to purchase. Not saying it's likely, but you never know.

There is a reason why it is called "private". If making an offer then webwork's suggestion is spot on. If for other reasons (legal) might have to go a different route.
