Can I register a domain name anonymously?

Does anyone know whether it is possible to register a domain name anonymously? For example could I put ‘The Webmaster’ in the name field when I register? Is this legal, would it work?

You are entitled to know why I am asking this suspicious-sounding question. It is because I’d like to put up a site giving information about some mental health issues, and it would be obvious that I was talking from personal experience. Although approx 1 in 4 people seek help for some kind of mental health problem during their lifetime, there is still a ‘stigma’ attached to it, and I would not want my friends/family/employer etc to be able to see my name through ‘whois’ or a simple click on their Alexa toolbar (if they have one).

I’d give my real address, and my real details for billing purposes, but can I hide my name on whois?

You are required to give valid contact information when you register your domain. If you have been found to have profived false information, your domain can be taken from you. Not sure how often it happens, but there is supposedly a system in place to file a report about false WHOIS information.

Some registrars will allow "private" registrations that do not disclose your personal information in WHOIS queries. They show up as the registering company and any correspondance goes through them.

Many thanks for this useful info. Would you happen to know the names of any registrars who offer this private registration service? It sounds like what I need.

Ian, almost all registrars offer the service, calling is various names: anonymous registrations, domain proxy service, etc.

No need to drop any further names.

Ian, when you get a chance, take a look at the Domain Forum Charter [webmasterworld.com]

Thanks again for the advice. Sorry I asked for specific names. I have taken this info on board so feel free to delete any or all of this thread if you wish.

Not a problem Ian, just one of the limits we impose as part of our solution to deter forum spamming.

Rules education aside, allow me to say "welcome to the Domain Forum". :)

Welcome aboard too, Ian. And yup, most registrars offer privacy services to hide your contact details.
