Creation Dates of domain names

Hi,
Does anyone have a good handle on when the creation date on a domain changes? Does it always change when a domain is sold to another party or if a person changes registrars? Will it change for other reasons? Do all registrars follow the same policy?
Thanks...Matt

Welcome to wmw Zooknic.

I'd like to know the answer to this as well, and add my own:

Is there any way one can find out the history of a domain name? As in find everyone who owned it at one time?

Hi Matt, welcome back. It is suppose to stick as long as it is being renewed - only the update date should change. I believe that is icann policy. If it expires, then it can be reset.

OK, I thought that the creation date shouldn't change unless the domain expires but I've run across some cases where the creation date has changed but the owner remains the same. It's really hard to say but the number of cases is small enough that I can believe that these are simply examples of a domain expiring and then the person re-registering it.

In terms of the ownership history of a domain, I don't think there is a way of doing this. I don't think that any registrar is keeping historical records. If you have a domain that was registered pre-july 1998 I could probably tell you who owned it then but that's about it.

Did we ever find any resource to do this?

Brett is right about ICANN policy. But policies are for normal people. All registrars do what icann tells them to do. However NSI/Verisign will reset your intial date in a few situations. If you move a domain to them or you sell your domain and then transfer ownership using them.

Is there a place you can see Domain history. Well, no. But there is one. NSI has all records that were ever used with them backed up. So if it was a super big deal I would approach them.
