IF geo = U.S. THEN .US

ELSE IF geo = global THEN .info or .org

.us is a ccTLD. Use .info or .org rather than a cctld. Interestingly .info is more popular than .biz in Europe so it might be a more useful extension than .org if the geo portal site is going to be an informational site.

I have two .info websites. As my nick would suggest, I'm not U.S. based, although around 20 percent of my visitors are in the U.S.
The sites are there to provide and exchange information, so the TLD made perfect sense and although the sites are still embryonic, the TLD is showing signs of being good for encouraging traffic. I think .info domains will become very popular and I'm banking on it in fact.

I would not use a .org unless it was for a non profit organisation charity sports club etc.

There are some nice .info sites. A nice geographic example is spain.info, it also does well in the search engines.

If it is for a .us location it would depend on the precise nature of the site whether I chose a .us or .info I would also register both the .us and .info which ever I used as the primary address. (Note though .us have nexus requirements)
