I had a phone call this morning by a company.
They said they were making a courtesy call to my company as a man had asked to register my company's domain names with the 'ltd' and the 'limited' tacked on the end of the normal company name.
I instantly thought this was a scam as I've had these sort of calls before. The idea being that the caller then goes on to offer you to buy the domains in question yourself at a high rate.
The woman calling me made a very convincing story about this 'man' who said he would not get in to trouble for registering them as he was only going to use them as re-directs.
I challenged her, told her I was in the business and said if he did that I'd simply take him to court, adding that I suspected that this was a scam call.
To be fair to her she made it sound plausible. She said that although the domains were ordered automatically, they always flag ones with 'ltd' or 'limited' to check that it is the company owner who is ordering them.
She didn't offer to sell them to me, but she might have thought better of it after finding out that I had some knowledge on the subject.
Needless to say, I advised her that I would not register them if I were her as I would take the new owner to court and it would reflect badly on her company.
What do you think? Scam or plausible?
