Domain expires today

Best strategy to get it?

A nice domain I want expires today.
The current registrar doesn't offer backordering.
I don't want to contact the current owner in case I remind him to renew :-)
This domain isn't worth much more than the annual renewal fee to me, so basically I'd like to get it once it drops, without making an offer to purchase.

What's the best strategy to make sure I'm in with a chance once the domain drops?

Register a backorder with all the domain drop-catchers (or at least the main 2 - Pool and SnapNames).

I have an account at SnapNames, but can't work out how to backorder, having never done so before. All their documentation seems to be about auctions - is that the same process?

I've always just done a search for the domain on the homepage, then clicked "add to cart" in the results.

Just remember to hang in there. You'll think that you do not have it, then you will. Likewise, you might think you have it and not. Have your account set up, etc. It's not a perfect system in terms of reporting what is going on at any given moment. Good luck.

You should wait more time.

The domain owner have 30 days to renew his domain after the expire date.

Generally after the domain expires takes to 75 days to make it available to the public.
