How to Successfully Make Unsolicited Offers to Sell Domains?

Just curious what everyone's thoughts on how to offer a domain to a potentially interested buyer?

Basically, i own some domains, and I would like to offer them to parties who might be interested because they own similar properties, or have relevant content on their website. Not trademarked terms, all generic or registered previous to trademark.

For example, i own a domain #*$!XXgroup.com. I know there is a company called #*$!XXgroup, but they only own #*$!XXgrp.com.

Whats the best way to offer it to them? Do i need to worry about sending an unsolicited email? Put a dollar amount in initial email?

Thoughts?

Unsolicited Commercial Email (UCE) IS spam so watch out. Your email account could be disabled or you could be sued since there are a number of anti-spam laws. (CAN Spam, etc.)

Unless you have a firm grasp of IP law I'd be wary of soliciting trademark holders.

IF you hold VERY robust domains you might proceed by first identifying companies that buy Adwords for the same keyword(s) as the domain. Then you might contact their marketing person, webmaster, etc. by regular mail or, subject to penalty, by email. Phone calls are also subject to the "Do Not Call" registry so determine if your practices might fall within the DNC prohibitions.

I think "the trick" is whether the domains are as good as you think they are and whether you "right price" them. IF they are robust commercial domains then they will have natural type-in traffic IF there is a sizeable market. Be ready to offer proof of traffic and prepared to offer a validation test.
