I've registered - do I have to get a host now?

ok I've registered a few domains as i don't want them to get snapped up. I'm probably about 2 months away from putting my website online. I don't have a host at the moment. Is that ok?

Do I have to have a host as soon as I've registered my domains?!

As long as you have the domain registered it's yours. As for hosting this is only really required once you want your site to go live.

I'm assuming they are all registered. went through godaddy - although I've been warned they aren't the greatest company (for adding things onto your bill) I thought there would be no harm in registering through them. Had an email and they show up in the account manager.

Sounds stupid but I remember years ago (I've never registered before) a friend got a certificate when he registered his domain. Am I remembering incorrectly?!

Registrars don't issue certificates on paper after registration. They send online notices of payment. ;)

Did you friend file and prove trademark usage for the same terms? That might explain the paper. (I think...)

And no, filing a trademark doesn't grant absolute exclusive usage for the domain name-sake, either.

Network Solutions used to. (I don't know if they still do as I haven't used them in years.) My guess it was for the online newbies who still felt something wasn't "real" unless they could touch & feel it.

That would be kind of neat to get a "certificate" for your domain name. Like a certificate of Title that you could sign off and transfer to the next person or leave in your will.

Until you got into the 100's of domain names, then it might just be a lot of wasted paper.

You used to get paper certificates sent for UK domains. Now Nominet give you the option of printing one off online.

Yup it was a uk registerant. I do like the idea of certificates with domain names but maybe it's just because its all new to me. Wouldn't be very good for the rain forest though!

I belive you still get paper cetificates with UK domains. I received a few a couple of months ago.

Nominet will send a paper confirmation of registration form for each .UK domain you register, or that you renew. This is merely confirmation of the domain that's been registered, who it's registered to and who you've used to register it with; it's normal for these to take six to eight weeks to arrive.

You'll find a scratch off panel on it, which provides a password for use in Nominet's administration site and will let you make limited changes to the domain name, as well as print off a paper registration certificate; Nominet don't send out certificates anymore, so that's as good as you'll get!

The biggest pile of filing I have is the pile of nominet Confirmation of Registrations (couple of thousand to be filed atm)

The recent ones where for new domains, but I believe I have some for renewals also.

As was stated earlier in this thread it can take some time for the certs to be issued. The ones I just received where for domains I registered about 3 1/2 months ago.

Best to invest in a good filing system then Live_Lead! You know it's getting bad when Nominet send your registration notices in a large box!

Funnily enough they sometimes turn up in big jiffy bags :) (might even be recorded delivery which gets me out of bed)

The Austrian registry sends you a nice Zertificate, suitable for framing.

But even the formal Austrians just send you a link to a PDF file.
