domain names are Not Available? what is that mean?

normally if a domain name is registered it offers an option to back order the domain name, but the name I search for is just said "Not Available", what exactely is that mean? the domain is been registered forever? no chance to getting it at all? what's my alternative to obtain the domain? btw i use godaddy for the search. any help would be appreciated.

Why not do a regular WHOIS lookup and see what its status is? Depending on its status, that'll give you a clue when and how to possibly grab it.
