I am trying to register a domain but it says already taken. But whois shows it's expired domain. Any idea how to get it released.
I got this while using whois:

Record last updated on 19-Apr-1999.
Record expires on 19-Apr-2001.
Record created on 19-Apr-1999.
Database last updated on 17-Sep-2001 13:21:00 EDT.

Was the domain name registered through Network Solutions? Worse still, was it owned by Network Solutions?

Netsol has been accused of hording domain names. It was commonly accepted that expired domains may take up to 90 days to be released, but I personally have been waiting for the release of a name that expired in October of last year.

I suggest you call Network Solutions and ask for the current record.
also ask them if anyone has registered the domain.
If not register it there on the spot.

I called NSI from Sweden (EXPENSIVE) and she sad that the domain hadn't been canceled even if the domain were to expire on the 17 Of July.
I don't know what to do anyone have a tip?

I read something, somewhere that they were having trouble with companies in the reselling biz using bots to scan their released domains - tying up the system with repeat requests, so they postponed releasing them until they can figure out how to deal with it. Sorry I can't place where I saw that.

I think I'll try giving them a call, since the worst possible result is that they hog the domain name for longer (no worse than the current situation). What are the hold times like to NetSol? Are there any quieter times to try calling?

I've had to call Network Solutions several times in the past month. Hold times were low - about 1 minute. Even when I called at 10:00am EST.

I still think something smells with Network Solutions (Verisign). Here's my story:

Firstly when there were no other registrar's to turn to, naturally my first domain was with NSI. Okay fine and dandy, but almost 2 years later, approx 2 months before my domain expired I wanted to transfer. It took almost two months to change my email and domain information. After countless phone calls, emails, faxes and online run arounds they finally updated my account. Now I thought, I'm ready to transfer because my info is finally correct. So what happens, I do my transfer and I'm denied!

I call NSI again, and they tell me according to the agreement you signed 2 years ago, we need 30 days notice before your transfer. Hmmm .. well I said I tried to transfer two months ago, but you gave me the run around to change my information. Oh well they pretty much said "tough luck".

Keep in mind during all this time they tell me that I can still pay for my domain even if my info is outdated. But why would I pay you and my new Registrar I asked stupidly, my whole point was to transfer anyway.

Well, here's the update. They definately expired my domain, and hung onto it for approx 3 months. I checked the status of my old domain multiple times a day and within 3 days of it being grabbed they changed the record stating they could not find my domain or the whois database was not reachable, but some of my old information still came up. Well at the end of those 3 days, someone else registered it through (I won't mention the name), but I know this company deals with those services that gaurantee you'll get an expired domain. NSI just happens to deal with them as well. If you're wondering I did try registering again when the record was supposively on the glitch, and I couldn't. I even tried registering through NSI just to see. Within those 3 days I kept a very close eye with different whois resources waiting for the release, and it never happened.

Well, that's my story. In the end I wanted to hang onto the domain for personal reasons, but it wasn't that important and certainly not worth going through NSI again. I added this info just to "get it off" my chest, and recommend IMHO not to use their services. Feels good, thanks for listening.

Stoopid question time:

Is this worth taking to the WIPO (wipo.org) who are the group assigned to deal with domain disputes?

[ecommerce.wipo.int...]

Or any other trading standards organisation?

Or ICANN?

Anyone got ideas - NSI is dreadful and in any other area would not be able to get away with this.
