I am at the stage where i need to register a domain.

Firstly if I am buying a .com am I going to be charged 25c by ICANN everywhere?

Secondly is it better to go for one year registration (and shop around again after that year) or ten years in the hope the prices will go up but you'll have saved some money?

What am I looking for other than a good price?

In many cases domain registrars are much of a muchness.

If you are going to use the domain for a site, then your considerations should be, can you transfer away without being penalised ( important ) ( read the fine print) do you have full control over dns .. is there automatic rebuy on your account? are the domains automatically locked..

if you are just using the domain as contact then you must add..
can you implement redirects directly from your control panel. does it come with free POP mail

apart from that it is prett painless..

although you may find people are reluctant to recommend as everyone involved with domain registration has had some problem or other with their registrar.. in general ALL of these companies are ****heads but you've got to deal with them...

Personally I tend to go with 1 year registration, although some places insist on 2 years

Also sometimes paying a few bucks more is worth it. I know I can go and get domains for $7 at a big shot registar, but I'd rather go to a smaller one and pay $10.

Big ones always try to trick you and upsell stuff, and then have weird rules, etc. Too much bureaucracy. GoDaddy I am looking at you :)

funny I've actually been looking at go daddy today simply to check for possible domain names. I did a run through a did realise that they tried to sell me about 10 extra products - no thanks.

Also fed up with them adding online/home/site/web to every domain I choose that is taken.

So I don't think I will be using them. Getting nervous now though after reading that post about companies selling domain names before you get the chance to buy them ie - selling searchs so you have to pay more for your site name. Better get mine in quick!
