In researching top competitors in a particular (competitive) industry my company is branching out into, I came across the website of the leading brand. They have 20 years of industry experience - pre-Internet and are holding their own, still, in the digital age - obviously having mastered staying on top of SEM.

They place on the first page of several different high-ranking key terms relative to this industry, in the major SEs.

My question is this: I found this brand (same logo/brand identity - different design - w/the call-to- action being lead generation) under a different domain , included in AdSense ads.

I realize using mulitple domains to continue increasing traffic and driving sales isn't uncommon, but I would like to get some feedback/insight on where those of you with more experience than me think this type of site promotion falls on a white/gray/black hat scale.

Especially considering the AdSense ad's domain is one of those tricky 438 characters long (exactly!) w/a redirect in there someplace - and just looking very sketchy in general.

I realize there are prolly industry terms for the practices I'v just outlined. Being new, I'm not quite aware of all the lingo. Again, any insight is much welcomed by me.

I'm naturally curious as we will be competing and want to stay on the ethical side of the border in our marketing efforts.

Not quite sure what you're asking.

a) Multiple type-in quality domains that are permanently redirected to main website?

b) Multiple sub-topic targeted websites linked to main site?

c) Mutiple copies of main site?

d) Exclusive and extensive network interlinking?

e) A network that suddenly springs up or one that is gradually built?

IF the bottom line objective of the multiple domain strategy is to game the search engines then it's not the best of ideas, at least as a long term strategy, especially in competitive niches.

I'm naturally curious as we will be competing and want to stay on the ethical side of the border in our marketing efforts.

If this was a bricks and mortar business and they bought lots of billboards would that be unethical?

If they bought lots of ads in the newspaper would that be unethical?

It sounds like your competetion is aggressive and good at internet marketing. I'd say learn to play the game better than they do or find another market. ;-)
