I think it's time for you to pay a visit to ICANN's website [ICANN.org], as ICANN is "the authoratative source" for news about new gTLDs, newly proposed gTLDs, news of gTLD release dates, sunrise periods, etc.

According to the BBC [news.bbc.co.uk], ICANN is to decide this week on opening up the registration of TLD's. Basically anyone would be able to register a TLD.

From what I understand from the ICANN website, there was a workshop today at the ICANN meeting in Paris on new gTLD's, and the Board of Directors will decide on a policy recommendation in "mid 2008" - perhaps that's what the BBC article refers to.

Here's another article [iht.com] on the upcoming TLD policy changes, in the IHT.

It seems that personalized extension will become a reality beginning 2009.

What a mess ?

Just few examples so that everyone can understand the mess - you.tube, tech.crunch, micro.soft, twit.ter, sees.mic, face.book, daily.motion

I have a portfolio of 20 domains (e.g. example.com), it means that it will be almost impossible for me to book all names (e.g. ex.ample, exa.mple, exam.ple).

Anyway, what do you think of this ?

Oups ! I almost forgot !

It is also the end of domain names sold at high price... So, hurry up, sell your domain names this year or never.

Potential phishing issues galore. Who should I trust, mybank.com or my.bank? gov.florida or florida.gov?

But I'd love to be the owner of .hotel and sell a couple of subdomains :)

Sorry but I have been informed through a French blog that what Paul Twomey (President of Icann) said in an interview for the "Les Echos" (a French newspaper) during the ICANN meeting in Paris was pure invention ! You name it... brainwashing !

Paul said on the 23rd of June (*translated)

"What is at stake in the ICANN meeting starting today in Paris ?

The stake is to liberalise the Internet generic extension. Besides the .com, .net and .org, and as from beginning 2009, Internet users will be able to acquire generic adresses by registering popular words like .love, .hate or .town, or even proper nouns like .lesechos."

He said today in another interview for a French blog (**translated)

"Your last interview for Les Echos has stired up controversy in the domain naming world. What you said gave the impression that buying an extension will be as easy as buying a domain name today...

Paul Twomey : It is not the case ! The request for the creation of a new extension will be open to everyone without discrimination. Nonetheless, the mecanism for the creation of a new extension includes the payment of implementation fees as well as administrative fees."

If you are interesting, the registration process will start in the second quarter of 2009 and the cost will be a 6-digit number (in USD) + business plan /programm.

Anyway, I already feel better ! What a relief !

We don't need any more TLDs. We really don't.

Not really Tom. There's something about greatname.com that .info or .travel or .jack can't replace.

The .com is universal, and the .com names are still popular despite some 250+ extensions. Where would you click on a .com or .ws if they both show on Google ?
