Long .com name or shorter .net, .info, us etc name?

I found one post on this subject here from 2005, but it didn't help me much.

I need to register a domain something to the affect of: thebestwidgetdesign. Of course the .com of that name is taken. I can add the state the business is located in and add 10 more characters to the name to get a .com - thebestwidgetdesignmystate.com. or leave the state off, save the 10 characters and use a .net, .org, .info etc.

I feel that having a .com name is important, especially with the targeted customer of this business. The .com version of the shorter name that is already taken, works in a different state. The business I'm representing and the business that owns the "good" .com name aren't global and work in their respective localities. Plus the businesses are dissimilar enough.

Should I buy the long .com AND a shorter .net, .org, .us or .info? Will people have a problem typing 36 characters as opposed to 26?

How about just adding the abbreviated state name?

Beyond that 26, or even 28, characters seems very long, 36 would seem far too long to me, especially if you are expecting visitors to actually type in the url.

Personally I'd do some more serious searching for a much shorter name.

Thanks Ken,

The business name is already 22 characters long. Abbreviated combos are available, like tbwdofxx. Maybe I should buy an abbreviated combo and the long version?

Just another thought: how would redirecting from a short domain name to the longer, more descriptive domain name affect search engine ranking?
