New lows in domain parking

Researched and found a name and now it's gone

I recently researched a domain name (.com) which is in a very active segment - all of the really good domains are already taken - and at the time it was available. Today, about a month later, I checked again and it has been bought up by Sedo.com and they want at least $100 for it.

This is the second time this has happened and both times I researched the name through Network Solutions. Seems to me that netsol is tracking requests for available domains and if they are not immediately purchased, they are sold to these parkers at sedo. A new low in my book.

Advice to webmasters: don't search through network solutions and if you have a good domain that's available, buy it up immediately. There are vultures lurking.

Opportunity typically only knocks once. When it comes to domains, buy them immediately. ;)

There appears to be quite a bit of this thing happening. I've seen more than a handful of topics about this here at WebmasterWorld.

So, is there an ICANN rule about this? Are registrars permitted to mine query data for marketing purposes?

If not, maybe there should be.

There would still be violations, but at least the biggest players would probably play by the rules. (But only by the very letter of them.)

That said, I think you explained what happened in your first sentence:
