Main domain affects on subdomains

Does 301 redirecting a main domain have any effect un a subdomain?

Greetings all.

Does 301 redirecting a main domain have any effect un a subdomain?

Example: suppose a company owns www.whatever.com and has a few sites under the subdomains first.whatever.com, second.whatever.com and infinity.whatever.com

now, the company wants to 301 redirect all www.whatever.com to another site

Will the 301 affect the subdomains in anyway.

During some initial testing it seems not - but not being a network administrator, i am wonder ing if anyone knows any pitfalls to worry about.

Do the subdomains have any links from the main domain, or vice-versa?

well, the main domain (www.whatever.com) does link to subdomain.whatever.com as just a "go here to do this..."-type thing

but no functionality at www.whatever.com is dependant on subdomain.whatever.com

make sense...
