Hi All, I've been using google alerts to find references to my sites. I got an email alert today regarding a wiki type site that's listing websites "whois" data they've apparently harvested. In my case they had my address, home phone number and even a map to my residence posted on their site for all to see.

I don't have any of that information on any of my sites as I don't enjoy phone calls at 3am, nor having complete strangers banging on my door looking for free blue widget advice on Sunday morning.

I could be wrong, but isn't the mass harvesting of whois, and then using that information to sell advertising down the sidebars against the tos
for most whois services?

That is just lovely. It is open information anybody can post it as it is like your home tax info open information.

The map is most likely being generated by google automatically and a link is inserted.

jeeze I can't believe the stuff people do. Thanks for the heads up but I can't change mine to private as I want some of the domains I own to sell...

That depends if most registrars define selling advertising space on the site as
"unsolicited marketing".

Curious about that site as well.

Consider yourself lucky not to live in Germany (or another country in Europe..I think). We got a law here that makes sure we have to post our contact details (including address, etc.) so that people can ask for blue widget advice on sunday mornings.

From one webmaster I know (who has a high-traffic site), he got visits at night by drunk people (or well 1) who wanted to discuss issues on his forum with him.

One of the main reasons that held me back from making a website for over 1 year after I started learning about the web. It's definitely a problem if you have social phobia!(which Ive luckily overcome by now).

German bureaucracy hehe
