Worried about multiple domains on the same server/IP

...all similar products too

Hi there,

Thanks to the excellent advice and information on this site, I have managed to not only sell my website widgetsperpiece.com, but have been asked by the new owner to SEO/SEM all of their websites. However, I am very worried as they now have 5 websites focusing on the same product niche that will be eventually hosted on the same server.

The current line-up:

1) premiumwidgets.com
2) extrawidgets.com URL-pointing to premiumwidgets.com
(not a problem)

their recently acquired -

3)bargainwidgets.com

which was duplicated (problem #1) entirely on
4)bargainwidgets4u.com

and my former website -

5) widgetsbythepiece.com
which is still happily residing on an entirely different host

I can ask for dedicated IP addresses for all of the above, and ask for registration under a variety of names if need be. I *will* make sure the duplicate content is abolished and each website has it's own unique content.

So... A) Will shared IP be ok? or should I change that to dedicated IP, or even separate servers

B) Will a common owner be ok? or should I change the ownership as well?

My concern is getting any or all of the websites blacklisted for spamming, although it appears one of the duplicates already has been.

Thank you!

So why do they want all of these different domains?
Why don't they just have one site with all of the information on it. I would think that this would make it much more usefull to the users, and you avoid all the problems of duplicate contents.

(This probably isn't really the right forum for this question... Probably better on an SEO forum.)

I don't understand the reason for not having a separate IP address for each site. IMO, it's really unprofessional not to have a seperate IP address. There are any number of technical and other problems that are easily avoided simply by having a seperate IP address for each site.

Most hosting companies charge no more than $1-$2/month for each additional IP address. Mine charges a one-time fee of $2 and no monthly fee. So, there's no economic justification for not having a seperate IP address.

My apologies if this was the wrong forum...

They bought all the different domains through an effort to expand their online business. Since they're not very internet-savvy, they went about it the "old" way - buying more businesses rather than hiring someone to make their primary website bring in more business. They are now trying to correct that by hiring me >.> . Each website comes with it's own customer base etc., and has previously been the online store for an established business.

The only reason they may not have separate IP addresses is because their webmaster will be keeping it all on his own servers, I haven't checked yet if he intended to give each their own IP or not... but after this, I will ensure that he does ^.^ .

I have seen this work well when the sites

a) don't interlink
b) each have different whois
c) each reside on seperate servers with different class c ips
d) domains are registered through different registrars

It might seem like a lot of trouble but they seem to enjoy having the top 5 results for thier widget searches and competing with themselves instead of others
