Type-In Traffic: How is it determined?

I am looking at reports...

Looking at my registrar reports it shows that I got a boatload of type-ins. Not surprising since I own many great names in a foreign language, but how does my registar figure them out?

Is it simply by deducting the referrals from the total number of visits? Or is there a better way? Also, I see "Typos" as a source...how do they know that?

thanks to anyone who can shed some light

The reports should show referrals.

they show them, but I am wondering about type-ins. Are the difference between total users and SE referrals?

There's non human in there too. On sites with low traffic they can be quite a significant proportion.

My site stats don't (can't?) distinguish type-ins from bookmarks. What gets me is the ones who do a Google search on the URL rather than just typing it in.

Type-ins should should be reflected by either http://www.example.com, http://example.com, www.example.com or example.com as the referral.

Due to the limited utility of parked pages I have to believe, with the exception of lapsed websites, "parked domain bookmarks" are extremely rare. In the case of lapsed websites bookmarks to the old site are likely rapidly removed.

Googling of domains will likely never end. I've never Googled a domain but "whatever it takes". ;0)

Webwork,
I have several domain.com referrers so that must be it.
I too, cannot think of a way to get rid of domains as a navigation tool. Even if SEs become 500 better if I have greenwidgets.com it is much more likely for me to make a site about green widgets so SEs will always, by probability alone, given them more weight. And, yes, I have noticed that many people do google many domain.com and at times "my domain.com" (with the space in between for 2 word names)

What gets me is the ones who do a Google search on the URL rather than just typing it in.

Its a good idea and it has significant benefits over typing it into the search bar. For example

If the website is reasonably well known and you have thick fingers Google politely asks "Did you mean" :)

[google.co.uk...]

Google even suggests alternatives when it doesn't think the domain is worthy to include in their index :o
