Idea for selling domains

Dear Friends,

I am new to the group who are trying to make money on the web and the thing that I really like is the idea of selling domain names.

The reason is because I feel I have a real talent for getting real good domains and so far I have acquired some really good ones and now I want to sell them.

I have been doing my homework and see that the domain broker sites are not always the best way to go.

However does this make sense:

1) Set up a home page with links to pages that describe each domain. Each page with no BS, just a good explanation of the domain name.

2) Point the DNS of all your domains to THAT home page so anyone who types in this domain will end up at your home page and subsequently see that domain.

3) Start using everything possible to drive traffic to that home page, like Google adwords and search engines and everything you can. This should produce much more traffic than all the brokers of 39994394343 billion domains can offer.

4) If you find a buyer use a third party esquire company (like who?)

This seems to be a good idea, am I missing anything?

Thanks to all
RB

Hello PurpleParrot and welcome to WebmasterWorld. I see that the entrepreneurial spirit is upon you. Good for you. The world needs a fresh supply of entrepreneurs or it gets a bit stale. :)

Perhaps your idea of what a good domain name is doesn't not correspond to the view of the domain buying marketplace?

Perhaps that is why these domain names are available for you to register?

There was a time when "good domains" were there for the picking. That was around 1996.

Proceed cautiously. Only risk what you can afford to lose whilst still going on with your life. It is a gamble and, given the market you are targeting, it would be a special talent indeed for you to find unregistered domains for which there is a real demand.

Ok, I accept the warning, but listen for a second: While you say that all the "good" domains were taken up around ten years ago, you are overlooking a major point: The world has changed a lot since then!

This is my talent to find good domains that are on there way UP, not DOWN.

However could you plz comment on my marketing idea with the home page etc.

I understand "your talent" but what do you think people were doing in 1996, besides mining the gold nuggets that were laying around on the ground, waiting for a business model?

In 1996, 1998, 2000 and onwards domainers were doing the same thing your are attempting to do: predict future utility domains. It's a good strategy, you just have to 1) be very good at it; 2) be patient; 3) not tread on other's trademarks or famous marks.

I think attempting to predict the future and mine for generic "future relevance domains" is one of the best angles on speculative domaining. It's a methodology that I specifically discussed and recommended during my domain presentation at past WebmasterWorld PubCons.

So far as your idea concerning marketing, the great truth about domain sale remain a constant: A good name will sell itself.

Everything else is simply chasing small change, i.e., reselling amongst speculators and some buying based upon a proven record of direct navigation traffic.

You can redirect your domains. You can post them at forums. You can post them at domain auction sites. You can put a line in a WhoIs record indicating the domain is for sale. You can create splash pages.

Based upon my experience I'd say the best way to approach this is to park the domains with a domain parking service. This will acceomplish 3 things: 1) It will establish whether the domain has any traffic and will build a traffic record; 2)IF it has any traffic you will start making money to pay for renewals; and, 3) Most parking services allow a link to attach to the lander indicating the domain is for sale.

That's the best way to do it right now.
