Domain Registration Scam

Company trying to get you to buy other "like" domains to fight competition

Recently, I had the name of one of my websites registered as a Trademark. I received an email yesterday from a "concerned" domain registration site that was notifying me that someone is trying to register various domains using my TM'd name. (e.g., Name.asia, Name.cn, etc.).

In their email they try to tell me how this other company might buy these domains and sell them to me at a profit or maybe even be buying them up for my competitor. Without specifically mentioning it yet, I can register for all of these alternate names with them [I already own the biggies - Name.com, Name.net, etc.) .

For those of you that have been around for a while, I do not need to warn you to watch out for this. If you are new, do your homework & read this forum and know what domains you need and do not need. Also be aware of the requirements for registering foreign domain.

thedigitalauthor: have you bought all the availabe names around the trademark as it would sill be a good idea scam or not. Go to you register and do it.

Yes, I took all reasonable precautions long before the name was even trademarked.

I had the same, a registrar emailed me out of the blue suggesting that I buy (myfullname).com

I decided it wasn't a bad idea so I went to my own registrar and registered it. :)

Unsolicited domain offers scream scam to me so if the idea seems like a good one, at least do it with someone you can trust.

heh, I've done the same thing, on occasion, when I get one of those same emails.

thedigitalauthor I figured you had just wondering. I just as well trademarked a name but haven't gotten any spam yet.

Could be I did a .us and not a .com and they figured it wasn't something to waste their time over.
