So I just checked for fun and <the automated domain appraisal> says webmasterworld is worth $9.3 million.

My main site is worth $10K, and my new site is worth $250.

Brett needs to add some google adsense on this site :)

Hi Webwork,

I'm new to this forum. Just curious to find out why the world auto domain appraisals makes you gag?

From time to time a new auto-appraisal tool comes along, the operator starts to pump and promote their tool in forums, and I - despite my better instincts - test it.

Gag? Nah. Roll my eyes a bit, as I witness the system's intelligence? Yep. Laugh out loud sometimes at the numbers they produce? Absolutely.

In the present marketplace the best indicator of any domain's value is an auction that manages to attracts developer / enduser attention.

The aftermarket is still a work in progress. Domain auctions are still mostly dominated by domainers, though I know Rick S. made an initial attempt to draw in Madison Avenue (the advertising and marketing world). Most reported aftermarket sales are still domainer-to-domainer sales. The domain tools "attempt" to be intelligent by drawing upon reported sales but, based upon my own experience and conversations I've had with others, I'd say that the reported sales constitute less than 10% of actual domain sales.

There's a myriad of reasons why the auto-appraisal tools make me groan. They can be of some (small) value, particularly for the entirely clueless, but they can also be hazardous to the interests of the entirely clueless.

In the past 12 months I've had more than one person/company come to me with appraisals from automated appraisal toos and they made their initial offers accordingly, sincere in their beliefs that it was a reasonable offer. In all cases, after a bit of education and an invitation to read certain "better source material", deals were concluded that were at least 10Xs the price of the appraisal.

Automated appraisal tools, for now, are for entertainment purposes only. Just like psychic readings.

And just like psychic readings they can sometimes predict the future. ;-P

Thanks for your explanation Webwork.

I was thinking, after quick search on google, the value of domain names fractuated from one appraisal website to the other. Although I think Webmasterworld.com is priceless, someone quoted $1.6 million instead of previously quoted $9.3 million.

It's interesting you brought the psychic readings into this post. I am involved with psychic entertainment biz. You must be a psychic Webwork LOL

The really good appraisal tools are based on the number of times a word appears in Google. lol. I still remember hearing that one in the early days of domain appraisals on Afternic back around 2000.

They used to call them "hits" (the number of times the word appeared in Google). Haha. The conversation usually ended quickly when you told them to Google crap.

One time a new domain owner was so upset I gave him a very low appraisal, he emailed me privately, in disbelief asking, "How can my domain name be worth less than I paid for it!?!?"

Well this begs a question though: What is the most accurate way to appraise a domain? Especially one which has never been used in the future (no visitor, no PR, no backlinks) yet may feature pretty sought after keyword?

And to you have any examples of good online appraising tools? I realize that number of paid appraisal services exist but I don't think they are anywhere near close the value for money spent.
