Im interested in a domain name that's already registered to a domain dealer that i believe has gone out of business, hence it could drop available shortly.
I made contact with DirectNic who handle the domain and they said its not been renewed or expected to be renewed as yet and I should register for it with snap names as it will go their first.
I cant see a great demand for this name but it is relevent to one of my companies and i would like to secure it all the same but im concerned that like any name you want these tasters might get to it before me and inch the price up?.
Snap names start the bidding already at $60 which i have bid. I have also registered for it as a backorder domain at both Godaddy and pool.
Anyone experience of this? Is it a hit and miss process? One that you might just have to walk away from if a few brokers take it first and try it on? or is their a better way to ensure sucess, should i bid higher at Snap to start with to put others off?
Any advice appreciated
It's erratic and all depends on which registrar is first in line the millisecond (yes, that fast) it is released.
You have some pretty good bases covered there, I think your chances are good, but also be prepared for it to go on the auction block if others want it from the same drop-service that picks it up.
In other words, if you registered for it with two drop services, say A and B and if "A" has 5 people who want it and "B" has 1, if B gets it, you're paying the fee (mostly $60) if A gets it, expect an auction where it can get pretty expensive.
Either way, it's best to register for it with a few services. Good luck with it!

I wouldn't bid higher ... as you likely know, if you are currently the only bidder any higher amount you bid will only be a proxy ... I would wait and see if there is a real auction, as a result of them actually getting the domain name. (Although, I confess, I have, in the past, put in higher proxy bids in "maybe they will get it auctions" ... it's a valid strategy ... I just don't do it anymore ;-)
I have also registered for it as a backorder domain at both Godaddy and pool.
You might want to look at this recent thread [webmasterworld.com] in this forum, and also place a backorder at NameJet.
